David Arquette had hoped for an extended love scene with Courteney Cox in Scream 2 but was derailed due to the fact that director Wes Craven doesn't like to exploit sex too much. Fortunately, NY Rock does -- which is why I'm presently in the process of writing this article.
As usual when tackling this genre of art (currently known as The Cheap Sex Piece of the Month), I began to wonder what the purpose of this text would be: To fill the reader in on essential facts about Courteney or to fill in the blank spaces around the pictures. I mulled this over while gazing at provocative photos of Cox, slated for the story, and figured it was a little of both.
Without further adieu, then, to accommodate the former of these two concepts, I give you this:
Courteney Cox's piercingly good looks worked well for her early on in life. When most young girls were still dreaming of the prom and busy reading Tiger Beat magazine she was busy appearing on the cover.
Two years later, at age 19, she came into national prominence via a television commercial in which she apprised American woman everywhere as to what their preferred tampon of choice should be. Cox's pixieish looks and azure-colored eyes made her the perfect foil for the little blue box of Tampax which she proudly displayed for us to see. Still using pads? she asked of women everywhere. Courteney followed the inquiry by setting wayward females firmly on the enlightened path to the more cylindrical hybrid of the product.
You may not remember Courteney's stint as the teenage Tampax spokesperson but chances are you do recall her as the willing and nubile Bruce Springsteen groupie in his Dancing in the Dark video. (I'm sure you fondly remember the Boss yanking Courteney on-stage to do the jerk with him in front of an arena full of adoring fans.)
Cox's career continued to flourish following her appearance in the Springsteen video. She appeared in Family Ties, as Michael J. Fox's girlfriend, and she made love to dog detective Jim Carrey in the epic thriller, Ace Ventura. It was her arrival upon the set of Friends, however, as the matronly Monica Geller, that sent Cox to the upper stratosphere of stardom. She and the other cast members currently pull in a handsome and well-publicized figure of $100,000 per episode. Courteney's days of hawking Tampax are clearly well behind her.
The icing on the cake for Courteney Cox arrived when she tackled the role of hardened news reporter Gale Weathers in Wes Craven's huge box-office success Scream. Cox, it appears, made the transition to a less wholesome character type in good stead and even managed to enjoy the process along the way. It's fun being bitchy, she admits -- a 100 million dollars in ticket sales says that a few members of the audience agree.
Whether audiences lap up Scream 2 as readily as they did its progenitor is a question that will soon be answered: Dimension Films will be releasing the film on December 12th. Hit or not, Cox's house seems well in order. At 33, she's still got her looks, and a weekly stipend of $100,000 from NBC, to fall back on if things start to get a little rough for her on the big screen.
